Grid & foundation

The ground is read, then the load is given somewhere to go.

A structural grid is set out from the datum, and a raft spreads the whole building across the soil rather than concentrating it under each column. Bearing capacity decides the foundation, and the foundation decides everything above it.

Transmission towers, gantries & substation buildings

Structural design of electrical infrastructure in STAAD.Pro and Excel: transmission tower foundations, gantry steel structures, substation buildings and manhole design. Infrastructure like this is loaded differently from a building — wind and conductor pull govern rather than occupancy, and the foundation is sized for overturning rather than bearing.

Crumble — interior construction, MM Alam Road & Johar Town

Site engineer on the interior construction of two Crumble branches: supervising joinery, tiling and electrical layout, calculating materials, handling billing and labour, and coordinating between client and contractor. Fitting out a space that already exists is its own discipline — you inherit the structure, verify what is actually there against what the drawing claims, and check every alteration against the load path already in place.

Roads and services with the Phase 8 Maintenance Branch on the CCA 3 development near Barki Road: material estimation, road surveying, testing the individual pavement layers, pressure-testing water supply and sewer lines, and calculating work progress. Infrastructure inside a live, occupied scheme, where access and existing services constrain the work as much as the design does.

Ten-storey parking plaza, Central Business District Lahore

Site execution on a ten-storey parking structure with two basement levels in Lahore’s Central Business District — inspection under the site engineer, daily progress reports, non-conformance reports and machinery usage records. On a job like this the basement sequence and the deep excavation set the pace for everything above.

Behaviour of cementless recycled-aggregate concrete beams

Research with a team on fly-ash based geopolymer concrete — concrete with no Portland cement in it at all. Fly ash from several different sources was tested while varying the alkaline-activator-to-fly-ash ratio and the sodium hydroxide molarity, and the resulting beams were compared against ordinary Portland cement beams. The question underneath it: can you remove the most carbon-intensive ingredient in concrete and still get a member that behaves the way a designer needs it to.

Load, tolerance, and the discipline to keep adding.

I train seriously. It is not a separate hobby from the engineering — it is the same idea running twice.

A structure has a capacity. You find it by understanding how load moves through it, you respect its limits, and you strengthen it deliberately over time. Progressive overload is just a loading schedule. Failure is what happens when the demand exceeds the capacity you actually have, not the one you assumed.

The habits transfer: measure honestly, add load gradually, never skip the boring foundational work, and know the difference between a number you calculated and a number you hoped for.

A structure and a body obey the same physics. Both fail where the load path is weakest.
